In analytical chemistry, we often determine the amount of chemical species from mass measurements. For such measurements, metric units of kilograms (kg), grams (g), milligrams (mg), or micrograms (pg) are used. Volumes of liquids are measured in units of liters (L), milliliters (mL), and sometimes microliters (pL).

FVA uses standard forecast performance measurements (metrics) to identify value-added or non-value-added activities in the process that contribute to the accuracy or inaccuracy of the demand forecast. The result is a mechanism that reduces non-value-added touch points, thus improving the overall accuracy. Companies that have successfully implemented FVA have experienced significant improvement in overall forecast accuracy and reduced cycle times. If an activity does not improve the accuracy of the statistical baseline forecast, it should be eliminated, or minimized (simplified), to reduce cycle time and resources.

Sticking to the easy measurements Metrics are hard, I get that. But if you are taking the easy way out and not measuring based on some of the more advanced metrics I cover in this chapter, you are not proving your value in a way that ties your tecun to financial outcomes. 

Defining the appropriate measurement (metrics) to track the progress of the project is as important as the process. This step determines the types of metrics required - business-related (costs, defects, etc.), hazard/risk related injury data or other types. The team must understand primary and secondary ways of monitoring improvements using the data. 

The term "performance measurement" refers to the selection and employment of metrics that are amalgamated into measuring systems in order to ensure the performance capability of the supply chain. In this context the notion measure, metric and key performance indicator (KPI) can be used synonymously (Erdmatm, 2002 92). Contributions to the selection and classification of metrics are provided by Beamon (1999), Chan Qi (2003), Gunasekaran et al (2001), Neely et al (1995), Reiner (2004) and Supply Chain Council (2006).
