MEANS procedure

Convergence of the FEP results was carefully studied. A typical mutation has 5-10 windows each consisting of 15 M configurations of equilibration and 10 M configurations of averaging. Changes in the means of patient populations may be caused by multiple variables (see Chapters 16 and 17). Changes in the demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients, such as the ratio of males to females, the ratio of hospitalized patients to outpatients, or the presence of many specimens from a specialty clinic can alter the mean value. Similarly, changes in preanalytical conditions,such as tourniquet time and specimen storage, alter patient population means and can therefore be monitored by use of patient means. These variables are not monitored by those control procedures employing stable materials thus the patient mean procedures provide additional capabilities and should be used in conjunction with other control procedures.

A bromine spill would cause bromine vapor concentrations in the unventilated laboratory to reach IDLH values in less than 1 min, an instantaneously dangerous situation. Even if the laboratory were ventilated, the flowrate necessary to keep the concentration of the atmosphere below the TLV cannot be achieved by practical means. Procedures for the prevention of such spills must be carefully developed, and materials necessary to neutralize a bromine spill must be readily available to minimize the danger posed by the use of this chemical. 

Estimation of Factor Loadings FA in a more narrow sense means procedures where the reduced correlation matrix,/ , Eq. (5.35) is reproduced. For that, the communalities are required. The reproduction of the original correlation matrix R (Eq. (5.14)), as done with PCA, is not an FA in a restrictive sense. However, because PCA has been discussed already above, we will use it here as the basis for performing a FA. 

In former years, many efforts to promote safe practices consisted almost entirely of a campaign that alerted employees to the hazards in their workplace and urged them to work safely. The modem concept is that hazards that cannot be eliminated should be controlled, first by design and then by procedural means. Procedural means consist in relying on employees to perform tasks properly and safely. Use of procedures is a less desirable means of accident prevention than is good design but because all hazards cannot be eliminated by design companies rely on the safe practices of their workers. To ensure safe work practices by their employees, companies must have an effective safety promotion plan.
