MD players

One solution that should not be overlooked is to record to a dedicated device such as a tape deck (preferably a DAT deck) or an MD player. While this means that you won t be using AQD as your recording studio and you ll lose some convenience, the many noisy complications that are inherent in recording into a computer are completely avoided by going this route. Using even a mediocre microphone and a Walkman-type tape recorder can often produce better recordings than a poor sound card on a noisy computer. There can be issues with tape playback speed and synchronization, however.

Often, the manufacturing capabilities themselves have a major influence in the process of alloy selection. The conversion of the MD player to a lead-free process focused around two important elements. First, choose a lead-free alloy that could be processed utDiz-ing the existing factory s assembly equipment. Second, the aUoy must meet the MD electrical and mechanical requirements. 

Figs. 69, 70, and 71 show that the use of lead-free solder (Sn-Ag-Bi-In) has not resulted in reliability problems. However, some joints have indicated a concern with the potential precipitation of bismuth from the alloy over time. Therefore the bismuth content of the solder used to assemble the MD player will be reduced from 2.5% bismuth to 0.5% bismuth with 6% indium. 

Material cost was another issue of concern. With the introduction of lead-free, economies of scale worked against the MD player product. No other manufacturer was using a lead-free solder in significant volume. When first introduced in 1998, the cost of the lead-free solder paste was about SI 50/kg. Then in 2000, it dropped to 100/kg. By 2003, the cost of the lead-free solder paste was only marginally higher than eutectic Sn-Pb with the downward trend continuing.

The title, King and Queen, was once again borrowed from chess, but the players of 1911, my two brothers [in Joueurs d Echecs MD-57], have been eliminated and were replaced by the chess-pieces of the King and Queen. 

In the era of the Internet and efficient graphics cards we have tens of programs designed to visualize a protein structure. Each year brings new players in this competition. Many researchers prefer to pay a license fee and to use professional graphics for visualization of their structure and MD data Accelrys, Maestro, HyperChem, Yassara, etc. A comprehensive list of modern molecular visualization codes may be found in the book by Gu and Bourne (2009).
