Reconstitution of T-ceU deficiencies with thymic hormones has not been successhil even though the various hormone preparations induce prothymocyte differentiation and functions of mature T-ceUs. The presence of Li+ results in the reversible inhibition of the hormone-induced meiotic maturation of starfish oocytes [226], and also reverses the inhibitory effect of forskolin on the spontaneous resumption of meiosis in uncoated mouse oocytes in vitro [227]. In the latter case, the effect of Li+ upon the adenylate cyclase response occurs only after it has been activated by forskolin. 

Thyroid hormone also plays a major role in the maturation of bone. A deficiency of thyroid hormone in early life leads to both delay in and abnormal development of epiphyseal centers of ossification (epiphyseal dysgenesis). Hypothyroidism-induced impairment of linear growth can lead to dwarfism in which the Umbs are disproportionately short in relation to the trunk with the apparent bone age retarded in relation to chronological age.

The results on the effect of thyroid hormone on myelin lipid synthesis correlate well with the in vivo changes induced under altered thyroid functions, proving, thereby, the direct influence of T on brain maturation. Another in vitro system used to demonstrate such a direct effect of thyroid hormone on myelination was an explant culture of cerebella obtained from newborn rats.
