Shipping containers, such as drums and pails, are subject to internal corrosion damage and failure when corrosive materials are shipped. Internal corrosion is not a problem when materials are shipped from the manufacturer because the proper container material is used and the containers are transported in a short time. However, contaminated or corrosive materials can cause failures when stored beyond the material s shelf life. The corrosion failure of drums containing hazardous waste tends to be more of a problem. In recent years a technique has been developed in which large quantities of adhesive resins called compatibilizers are used between layers of noncompatible extruded films, primarily in packaging applications. With this technology, up to seven layers of film (foil, paper, or plastic), up to three of which may be adhesive, may be combined to offer properties unlike that of any single-film material. The adhesive layer(s) may also contribute special properties to the multilayer composite film, in addition to acting as the compatibilizer. It is interesting to note that a particular plastic resin with adhesive properties may be used alone as an extruded plastic film, or in a multilayer composite film, where no compatibilizer is required, in which case it should not be counted in the adhesive statistics. Door and Pillar Trim Door and pillar trim did not come widely into use in automobiles until the 1960s [1]. A variety of materials, particularly thermoplastic substrates such as PP and ABS PP or ABS covered with vinyl skin, cloth, or carpet covered thermoset RIM substrates and covered natural fiber substrates are used in their construction. The trend is toward lighter materials that flow easily and are easier to mold during processing, to reduce the mass and therefore the material use [3]. The thermoplastic substrates are easily recycled. If a noncompatible covering material is added, the recycling becomes more difficult. There has been an effort to develop covered systems that are more recyclable for instance, PP substrate with a TPO skin.

Table 7 lists the compatibility of several thermoplastic resins. If plastics are deemed noncompatible or of limited compatibility, compatibUizing resins or additives may be added to the mix to achieve suitable properties (52). Where noncompatible materials are to be jmned, it is necessary to use a more noble metal in a jmnt (Hg. 3). Effective insulation can be usefid if it does not introduce crevice corrosion possilnlities. Srane difficulties arise in the use of adhesives, which might not be sealants.
