Materials engineering, profession

Even more than the petroleum industry, the petrochemical industry defmes the chemical engineering profession. The evolution of this industry has produced the changes in the country s needs for engineers and continues to evolve and employ most chemical engineers. The raw materials used in chemical synthesis have made the transitions... [Pg.147]

It is the job of a chemical engineer to develop and optimize chemical and physical processes in the transformation of raw materials to products. The efficiency and effectiveness of chemical processes will remain the heart of the chemical engineering profession. [Pg.108]

The notion of chemistry in vocational education conjures up many professions and occupations that do or may involve some knowledge of chemistry. Academic chemistry, industrial chemistry, analytical chemistry, pharmacy, chemical engineering, mining and metallurgy and chemistry teaching are obvious chemical professions. Environmental science, materials engineering and forensic science are less obvious professions that involve substantial chemistry. [Pg.125]

Conduct outreach to teachers, students, and parents. Society-sponsored teacher conferences and workshops could focus on the theme of Changing the Conversation, and materials for K-12 teachers could explain how engineering makes the world better, reflecting one of the main CTC themes. Communications about the engineering profession as a whole should be the main focus, but messages tuned to individual disciplines are also useful. [Pg.22]

A number of other companies have produced advertising or recruiting materials that reflect the spirit of Changing the Conversation (Table 2-1). They focus on the value of engineering to people s lives and on the creativity of the engineering profession, and show that a career in engineering is within reach for many young people who have vision and a desire to solve problems and help people. [Pg.55]

So, nearly half a century after the emergence of the concept, we its practitioners have in materials science and engineering a clearly distinct discipline which in practice doubles up as a multidiscipline, with a substantial number of independent academic departments and research institutes spread around the world, with its own multifarious journals and textbooks, and a large number of professionals, also spread around the world, who call themselves materials scientists and engineers and communicate with each other on that basis. We have a profession to be proud of. [Pg.541]

The diazotype process is an example of a non-silver system with wide commercial application. In general, it is used in areas which require a monochrome or neutral high contrast image rather than a full colour system. For this reason, the image hue is not as critical, except for aesthetic reasons, as in the three-colour silver processes. Diazotype materials are primarily used in making direct reproductions of written, typed or drawn materials, particularly in the drafting, engineering and architectural professions. [Pg.382]
