A suitable level of protective clothing must be selected for all workers.

Most places are required by law to maintain an MSDS for every chemical in stock. At this site, you can search by name, product name, or CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) registry number for an MSDS on a particular chemical and then print it out. This site also provides lots of information about chemicals, as well as links to other Internet MSDS sites and hazardous chemical reference sites. 

Seek medical assistance immediately after washing to ensure the chemical has been removed, to assess any eye damage, and to determine if further treatment is needed. Get information about the chemical, including its name and properties, preferably from a Materials Safety Data Sheet so the physician or medical person can evaluate the need for treatment. However, do not delay getting the person to medical care while someone searches for this information. 

Of course, many of these toxicity and environmental questions can be answered by the colorant vendor who will supply MSDSs (material Safety Data Sheets) and other safety and test data. In those cases where sufficient information about a particular compound is not available, it may be necessary to search one or more of the toxicity databases for analogous structures which have been examined for their toxic effects and use this information as a basis for making a judgment about the suitability of the colorant in question.
