Multiblock Copolymers. Replacement of conventional vulcanized mbber is the main appHcation for the polar polyurethane, polyester, and polyamide block copolymers. Like styrenic block copolymers, they can be molded or extmded using equipment designed for processing thermoplastics. Melt temperatures during processing are between 175 and 225°C, and predrying is requited scrap is reusable. They are mostiy used as essentially pure materials, although some work on blends with various thermoplastics such as plasticized and unplasticized PVC and also ABS and polycarbonate (14,18,67—69) has been reported. Secondary raw materials recovered from scrap are more concentrated and more pure than primary raw materials. Scrap is already in the metallic form, and requires only purification which, in the most favorable or desirable cases, involves only melting. The recovery of secondary metals can, therefore, be carried out with fewer and simpler operations, consuming a smaller amount of energy and causing less pollution, than primary metals production. The methanolysis begins with reasonably clean PET scrap to which a catalyst and methanol are added. This mixture is heated under pressure to force the PET to depolym-erize. The end products are ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). Pure DMT and ethylene glycol are obtained through reciystallization and distillation, respectively. Today, 50-80 % of the waste products from production are reused. Metal wastes, the largest contingent, are sold as scrap. The industry is making considerable efforts to recycle reusable waste products into its own, i.e., internal, processes.
