Film or sheet generally function as supports for other materials, as barriers or covers such as packaging, as insulation, or as materials of constmction. The uses depend on the unique combination of properties of the specific resins or plastic materials chosen. When multilayer films or sheets are made, the product properties can be varied to meet almost any need. Further modification of properties can be achieved by use of such additives or modifiers as plasticizers (qv), antistatic agents (qv), fire retardants, sHp agents, uv and thermal stabilizers, dyes (qv) or pigments (qv), and biodegradable activators. 

It would be preferable to incorporate both fluorescent and electron transport properties in the same material so as to dispense entirely with the need for electron-transport layers in LEDs. Raising the affinity of the polymer facilitates the use of metal electrodes other than calcium, thus avoiding the need to encapsulate the cathode. It has been shown computationally [76] that the presence of a cyano substituent on the aromatic ring or on the vinylene portion of PPV lowers both the HOMO and LUMO of the material. The barrier for electron injection in the material is lowered considerably as a result. Mass transport is understood to mean the molecular diffusion in, out and through plastic materials like that shown schematically in Fig. 1-3. This figure represents most applications where there is a layer of plastic material separating an external environmental media from an inner product media. The product can be a sensitive medium with a complex chemical composition, e.g. food, that must be protected from external influences such as oxygen and contaminants. It can also be an aggressive chemical that must not escape into the surrounding environment. Because this plastic material barrier layer usually includes low molecular weight substances incorporated into the polymer matrix, there are many applications in which the transport of these substances into the product and environment must be minimized.

In Fig. 2.2 the structure of UMC brand film materials produced by Japanese Nitto Co. is presented. The materials are used for hydrothermal insulation and anticorrosion protection of low-temperature pipelines transmitting liquefied gas. In these materials the barrier properties of the foil are supplemented by the strength of the polyester layer and the stability of the fluoroplastic layer to atmospheric effects [3].
