Outlined in this section will be the method of Maruyama et al. (12), who were successful in observing metaphase chromosomes inmeristem-atic cells of Vida faba when the fixation of freeze-fractured roots was performed after incubation in buffer solutions. The method allows for experimental studies on chromosome morphology. In fact, the published report also gives the effects of divalent cations on chromosome morphology.

Tetrachlorobenzo-l,4-quinone photosensitises the isomerisation of substituted styrenes (Roth and Schilling, 1979). By use of CIDNP it was shown that the quinone and styrene react to give radical ions and that the radical cation undergoes bond rotation which when followed by reduction gives the isomerised styrene. The chlorinated quinone [124] reacts with furan to give [125] in 92% yield (Maruyama and Otsuki, 1977). Evidence that product formation occurs via a radical pair comes from CIDNP studies. 

A variety of intramolecular hydrogen-abstraction reactions from amino groups by carbonyl groups have been studied. There is no direct evidence that these reactions involve an intramolecular electron-transfer reaction. However, on the basis of studies on intermolecular systems, this is likely to be the case when the carbonyl group is part of an electron-accepting system, e.g. a quinone or phthalimide group. Quinone [153] was found to give [154], [155] and [156] (Scheme 35) (Maruyama et al., [911 Falci el al., 1977). 

CVD of Sn02 from tin(II) acetylacetonate studied by Maruyama and Ikuta indicated two different decomposition mechanisms, depending on the deposition temperature. Below 400 °C decomposition is diffusion-controlled with a very small activation energy, while at higher temperatures the kinetic is surface-controlled with larger Ea values. 

In 1990, Osuka, Maruyama, Mataga, and coworkers examined porphyrin dyad 4 and other molecules closely related to dyad 3 with different aromatic linkers joining the macrocycles [19], When the zinc porphyrin of 4 was excited in dimethylforma-mide solution, Pzn-PFe(m) was produced. It decayed with a time constant of 52 ps, and the Pzn -PFe ii) state was observed by transient absorption techniques. The charge-shifted state decayed in 1.6 ns. By studying photoinduced electron transfer in the entire series of molecules with different linkages, the dependence of rate constant on the separation of the porphyrins was determined. A value for f in Eq. 2 of 0.4A- was obtained. 

Osuka, Mataga, Maruyama and coworkers have synthesized and studied a large variety of molecules that employ imides as aeeeptors [14-16, 56, 172-179, 182, 186, 222 226].
