Neural network classifiers. The neural network or other statistical classifiers impose strong requirements on the data and the inspection, however, when these are fulfilled then good fully automatic classification systems can be developed within a short period of time. This is for example the case if the inspection is a part of a manufacturing process, where the inspected pieces and the possible defect mechanisms are well known and the whole NDT inspection is done in repeatable conditions. In such cases it is possible to collect (or manufacture) as set of defect pieces, which can be used to obtain a training set. There are some commercially available tools (like ICEPAK [Chan, et al., 1988]) which can construct classifiers without any a-priori information, based only on the training sets of data. One has, however, always to remember about the limitations of this technique, otherwise serious misclassifications may go unnoticed. [Pg.100]

In addition to graft copolymer attached to the mbber particle surface, the formation of styrene—acrylonitrile copolymer occluded within the mbber particle may occur. The mechanism and extent of occluded polymer formation depends on the manufacturing process. The factors affecting occlusion formation in bulk (77) and emulsion processes (78) have been described. The use of block copolymers of styrene and butadiene in bulk systems can control particle size and give rise to unusual particle morphologies (eg, coil, rod, capsule, cellular) (77). [Pg.204]

Mechanical Properties and Structural Performance. As a result of the manufacturing process, some cellular plastics have an elongated cell shape and thus exhibit anisotropy in mechanical, thermal, and expansion properties (35,36). Efforts are underway to develop manufacturing techniques that reduce such anisotropy and its effects. In general, higher strengths occur for the paraHel-to-rise direction than in the perpendicular-to-rise orientation. Properties of these materials show variabiUty due to specimen form and position in the bulk material and to uncertainty in the axes with respect to direction of foam rise. Expanded and molded bead products exhibit Httie anisotropy. [Pg.335]

Pure polymeric acrylonitrile is not an interesting fiber and it is virtually undyeable. In order to make fibers of commercial iaterest acrylonitrile is copolymerized with other monomers such as methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, vinyl compounds, etc, to improve mechanical, stmctural, and dyeing properties. Eibers based on at least 85% of acrylonitrile monomer are termed acryHc fibers those containing between 35—85% acrylonitrile monomer, modacryhc fibers. The two types are in general dyed the same, although the type and number of dye sites generated by the fiber manufacturing process have an influence (see Eibers, acrylic). [Pg.362]

More important than either creep or fatigue in current car design is the effect of environmerit (Chapter 23). An appreciable part of the cost of a new car is contributed by the manufacturing processes designed to prevent rusting and these processes only partly work - it is body-rust that ultimately kills a car, since the mechanical parts (engine, etc.) can be replaced quite easily, as often as you like. [Pg.268]

The manufacture, processing and application of a particular material as an impressed-current anode requires knowledge of several physical characteristics. Knowledge and attention to these characteristics is necessary to design for anode longevity with maximum freedom from electrical and mechanical defects. [Pg.162]

In the second half of this section, we will discuss the mechanistic understanding of this chiral addition with lithium acetylide, the cornerstone of the first manufacturing process. Based on the mechanism of asymmetric lithium acetylide addition, we will turn our attention toward the novel highly efficient zincate chemistry. This is an excellent example in which mechanistic studies paid off handsomely. [Pg.21]
