Manual placement

DAVINCH operations involve munition handling, the manual placement of donor explosives around the munition, and the placement of a detonator into the donor explosive. When handling the mustard agent-filled 155-mm projectiles at BGAD, PPE may be required, although if the projectiles are inserted into the DAVINCH vessel using a robotic arm, as is done in Japan, that operation should not expose workers to explosives or agent. 

Molded-in inserts are commonly used with thermosetting materials. However, since the screw-injection process is automatic, it is desirable to use postassembled inserts rather than molded-in inserts because molded-in inserts require that the mold be held open each cycle to place the inserts. A delay in the manual placement disrupts an automatic cyclic operation, affecting both the production rate and the product quality. 

Demonstrate the accuracy and precision with which the fluid jet cutting system can position and cut the rockets using manual placement of the rockets. 

After the adhesive has been dispensed onto the PCBs or other interconnect substrate, bare die and other electronic components must be precisely placed. Of course, pick and place can be done manually using vacuum pick-up tools or tweezers, but this approach is useful only for small quantities, prototypes, or for rework. The risk of human error is high and accuracy is exacerbated as more and more very fine pitch devices are used. Even placing the device in the correct location, but in the wrong orientation can result in electrical failure. Manual placement is impractical for production quantities. 

This assures both that the part will sit stiU when the board is moved and that acceptable planarity offsets among the leads will stiU result in an acceptable solder joint. Parts placement may be done manually for prototype or low-volume operations, although the author suggests the use of guided X-Y tables with vacuum part pickup for even the smallest operation. Manual placement of SMDs does not lend itself to repeatable work. For medium- and high-volume work, a multitude of machines are available. Successful control of the placement process, whether a highly automated chip shooter step or the manual placement of odd-form components, must meet the following objectives ... 

Installation of propeller-type mixers varies greatly, depending on the specific application. Top-entering mixers utilize either a clamp- or flange-type mounting. It is important that the mixer be installed so the propeller or paddle placement is at a point within the tank, vessel, or piping that assures proper mixing. Until we have more experience, it will take some trial-and-errorto pick a good range and increment for k, but then that is the whole idea of trying it ourselves. This manual approach makes us better appreciate the placements and changes of closed-loop poles as we vary the proportional gain.1... 

Manual activation devices are normally placed in the main egress routes from the facility or location. Usually placement in the immediate high hazard location egress route and at the periphery evacuation routes or muster location of the installation is accomplished. 

Source plates may be prepared in advance and stored frozen, depending upon fhe probe ink stability. In any case, source plates should be brought to ambient temperature to assure that all components have redissolved. We recommend that source plates be centrifuged to remove any entrapped air bubbles from fhe bottoms of the wells. While manual preparation of source plafes is possible, the use of a robotic dispensing sysfem is highly recommended in order to avoid mistakes in placement of fhe probe inks in fhe wells and to avoid cross-contamination. The use of such a device will also allow more xmiform preparation of subsequent source plates. 

If plates are chosen as storage containers, it is necessary to isolate each sample from cross contamination and interaction with ambient air. This can be done by attaching lids or sealing the plates. A lid can be as simple as a plastic cover or a proprietary device that allows automated placement and removal. Sealing techniques range from cap mats, to adhesive seals, to heat seals. Traditionally, a sealed plate requires a manual step for seal removal. Recently a new technology provides automated seal removal.
