Main group element oxide ceramics

The effect of other main group elements is different The addition of Bi20s decreased the sintering temperature of calcia-stabilized zirconia (CSZ) and also augmented the growth of zirconia grains [46]. Dense ceramic systems were formed in the temperature range of 1200-1300 °C. X-ray analysis of these oxides revealed the formation of a cubic zirconia phase at room temperature. [Pg.297]

Silicon-containing ceramics include the oxide materials, silica and the silicates the binary compounds of silicon with non-metals, principally silicon carbide and silicon nitride silicon oxynitride and the sialons main group and transition metal silicides, and, finally, elemental silicon itself. There is a vigorous research activity throughout the world on the preparation of all of these classes of solid silicon compounds by the newer preparative techniques. In this report, we will focus on silicon carbide and silicon nitride. [Pg.143]

According to literature sources mainly oxides, nitrides, borides and carbides are used as ceramic raw materials of chemical and structural applications and the most common elements in these compounds are Be, Mg, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Y, Zr, La, Hf, W, B, Al, Si and Sn. These elements can be found in rather small area of the periodic table, i.e. in the groups 2 up to and including 6, 13 and 14. So apparently relatively few ingredients are used in this branch of ceramics to produce a wide range of products. The tricks of the trade are in the preparation. The properties are determined by a number of factors, such as the nature of the building blocks, the kind of bonds, the strength of the bonds, the crystal structure and the reactivity of the material. [Pg.277]

As has also been found in this type of ceramic sensor, the base resistance of the element gradually increases during operation (Yamazoe and Shimizu 1986). This drift seems to be related to the formation of stable chemisorbed OH-groups on the surface of metal oxides, which impede Grotthuss-type proton conduction. The presence of temporal drift is one of the main disadvantages of resistive humidity... [Pg.399]
