Magnetic polymer nanocomposites films

Magnetic polymer nanocomposites can be in the form of powders and suspensions, fibers, films and multilayers, or tridimensional solids. In each of these forms, they can be used in a large number of applications accordingly with their properties. A scheme of this classification is shown in Fig. 17.2. 

In solvent casting or solution mixing, CNTs are first dispersed in a suitable solvent and then mixed with a polymer solution to obtain a suspension of nanotubes in the polymer. The mix is then poured into suitable die molds and the solvent is allowed to evaporate to leave behind nanocomposite film. Solution based methods offer advantages of lower viscosities which facilitate uniform mixing and dispersion. However, and without any doubt, the in situ monomer polymerization in the presence of pre-prepared magnetic nanoparticles is the most common strategy to prepare nanocomposites based on conducting polymers. In this sense the polymerization can be carried out in either homogeneous medium or heterogeneous medium, i.e., in emulsion using surfactants, providing different types of nanocomposites, from films to core-shell particles.
