Another class of toroidal NMR probes is formed by toroid cavity detectors (TCD) [31]. These TCD have been mounted into cylindrical metallic autoclaves to study spin relaxation effects of gases under pressure [31]. If the toroid cavity detector is the metallic pressure vessel itself it is called a toroid cavity autoclave (TCA) probe [32, 33]. These probes can be tuned to higher resonance frequencies than TCDs and also show better spectral resolution [29]. The Mbssbauer effect involves resonant absorption of y-radiation by nuclei in solid iron oxides. Transitions between the I = Y2 the I = 72 nuclear energy levels induce resonant absorption (Fig. 7.4). A Mbssbauer spectrum is a plot of the transmission of the rays versus the velocity of their source movement of the source ( Co for iron compounds) ensures that the nuclear environments of the absorber and the source will match at certain velocities (i.e. energies) and hence absorption takes place. In the absence of a magnetite field the Mbssbauer spectrum consists of one (if the absorbing atoms are at a site of cubic symmetry) or two (symmetry distorted from cubic) absorption maxima. The Frederiks transition induced by an electric field has certain specific features not observed in the magnetic field equivalent. First, as the dielectric anisotropy is usually much higher than the magnetic one, the distortion leads to a spatial dependence of the dielectric susceptibility and a certain inhomogeneity in the electric field. Secondly, the character of the distortion may be affected by the electric conductivity and the influence of the flexoelectric effect.
