Plant magnesium

Dead Sea Works Process. The Dead Sea Works, a subsidiary of Israel Chemicals Ltd., aimounced plans ia 1992 to constmct a 25,000 t/yr magnesium plant at Beer-Sheva, Israel. The plant, to be based on Russian camaHite technology, is designed to use an existing potash plant as the source of camaHte. The chlorine by-product can be either Hquefted and sold, or used ia an existing bromine plant. Waste streams from the camaHite process, as well as spent electrolyte from the electrolytic cells, can be returned to the potash plant. 

Explosions have occurred in aluminum and magnesium plants as a result of molten metals coming into contact with water (134). 

Chlorinated Hydrocarbons. In the magnesium plant, samples from two different locations have been analyzed. Emissions from the chlorination plant were scrubbed with seawater and the particles collected as sewage. Figure 2 shows a chromatogram of chlorinated hydrocarbons in a sewage sample. As revealed by the chromatogram, the sewage contains a number of chlorinated benzenes and styrenes.

One million tonnes of magnesium [262] are found in a cubic kilometer of seawater, while in one year all the magnesium plants in the world produce about 300,000 tonnes. In the earth s crust there is much more magnesium than in seawater (seawater contains 3.7% of the total magnesium present in the earth s crust...
