Sylvinite ore is relatively soft and easily broken. Thus, continuous miners of the boring- or rotating drum-type can be used. These machines are modified continuous coal miners. This method is used in some of the mines in New Mexico, in all Canadian mines except the solution mines, and in many European mines. Ore is removed from the face by a number of methods, eg, with extensible belt conveyor ore-loading machines and shutde cars to the main haulage line. To obtain maximum benefits from the continuous miners, the ore transport system must be as nearly continuous as possible. 

A loose abrasive powder can be used to impinge on the rubber rather in the manner of a shot blasting machine, or tumbled with the rubber test pieces in a rotating drum. These are logical ways to simulate the action of sand or similar abradants impinging on the rubber in service, as may be the case with conveyor belts or tank linings, but this type of test is not very common. 

The DIN method is given in ISO 464954. The principle of the machine is illustrated in Figure 11.5 a disc test piece in a suitable holder is traversed across a rotating drum covered with a sheet of the abradant, which is why it is also called the rotary drum abrader. In this way, there is a relatively large area of abradant, each part of which is passed over in turn by the test piece, so that wear of the abradant is uniform and relatively slow. In the standard method there is no provision for changing conditions from those specified, other than a lower force for soft rubbers, but it would be possible to use other abradant cloths or papers and to vary the force on the test piece. The degree of slip is 100% and it would be inconvenient to test in the presence of a lubricant. Although not versatile, the method is very convenient and rapid and well suited to quality control. 

In addition, the rotary-platform, double-head abrader is specified for coated fabrics58 and the NBS abrader for shoe soles and heels59. The NBS abrader uses rotating drums with abrasive paper wrapped around them onto which the test pieces are pressed by means of levers and weights, but there is no provision for traversing the test piece across the abradant as in the DIN machine. 

Solution-cast film is produced on a larger scale for medical applications, battery separators, or other specialty uses with machinery of the type shown in Figure 3.2 [2], Viscous film is made by this technique. The solution is cast onto the surface of a rotating drum or a continuous polished stainless steel belt. These machines are generally enclosed to control water vapor pickup by the film as it dries and to minimize solvent vapor losses to the atmosphere. 

The mill contained 16 rotating drum machines, all of 200-pound capacity, and 50% of the mill s production (Nylon 66) was adaptable to dyebath reuse. Eight of the machines would thus be equipped for reuse. 

Powdered FRP was manufactured by a machine that have rotating drums with embedded many diamonds. FRP tanks were shredded and powdered to become about 30 micrometers of the average diameter.
