M-Pyrol

Methyl-2-Pyrrolidinone. N-Meth5l-2-pyrrohdinone [872-50-4] (44) (NMP or methyl-2-pyrrohdone, M-Pyrol) was fkst reported in 1907 as prepared by alkylation of 2-pyrrohdinone with methyl iodide (81). The present commercial route, ie, condensation of butyrolactone with methylamine, was first described in 1936 (50).

In a separate vessel, mix M-Pyrol, Igepal CO-630 together. Add hydroxyethylcel 1ulose/water mixture.

Add Igepal CA-630, Rhodafac RA-600, and M-Pyrol separately, mixing well after each addition. 

The reactor needs to be kept clean to keep the heat transfer optimal and to prevent solid material in the prepolymer. The method employed is to use an appropriate solvent such as methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methylene chloride, or m-pyrol (NMP). To prevent an explosive vapor mixture from being formed when the solvent is added to the reactor, the air must be replaced by nitrogen gas. The solvent needs to be heated to just above its boiling point and kept there until the solid material has been softened and removed from the metal. A second rinse with clean solvent may be needed.

M-Pyrol shows a low order of oral toxicity for each of the species Investigated. 

M-Pyrol Is readily absorbed through the skin and shows dermal toxicity of approxim itely the same magnitude as oral toxicity. 

As might be expected, M-Pyrol Is slightly more toxic by injection than by the other modes of appiication. Differences, however, are generally small so that toxicity is still low.
