Lynch et al. [21] have described a method for the determination of organic carbon in silty lake sediments. In this method the air-dried and sifted (-250 mesh) sample is leached with 4M nitric acid-0.1M hydrochloric acid for 1.5h at 90-95°C, and the extinction of the cooled, clean solution is measured at 500nm. The extinction correlates well with weight loss (%) on heating the sample between 120 and 800°C. The precision is 26%. The same leach solution can be used for trace-metal determinations.

Electron spin resonance was first applied to coal during the 1950s (Ingram et al., 1954 Uebersfeld et al., 1954) as a method for the determination of free-radical species in coal. Since that time, electron spin resonance has been used to compare the data for coals of different rank and to explore the potential for relating the data to the various carbon systems as well as offering valuable information about aromaticity (Toyoda et al., 1966 Retcofsky et al., 1968, 1978 Petrakis and Grandy, 1978 Kwan and Yen, 1979 Khan et al., 1988 Thomann et al., 1988 Nickel-Pepin-Donat and Rassat, 1990 Bowman, 1993 Sanada and Lynch, 1993). 

The PMN review process has evolved over time within the constraints set by TSCA. An important constraint is that submitters are required to furnish only test data already in their possession (if any) and are not required to conduct a battery of tests as a precondition for approval. This generalization holds true for basic chemical property data as well as toxicity data, and it is the main reason why TSCA has been such a powerful impetus for developing estimation methods for many of the parameters needed in environmental assessment. To illustrate how extreme the situation is, in one study of more than 8,000 PMNs for class 1 chemical substances (i.e., those for which a specific chemical structure can be drawn) that were received from 1979 through 1990,Lynch et al. (1991) found only 300 that contained any of the property data noted earlier as needed for environmental assessment. The U.S. is unique among industrialized nations in requiring its assessors to work in the virtual absence of test data. 

Overactivation of the NMDA subtype of glutamate receptors results in excessive Ca2+ influx via the receptor-associated cation channel leading to the activation of calcium-dependent enzymes, such as proteases, endonucleases, and nitric oxide synthases (NOSs) and to the production of nitrogen as well as oxygen free radicals thus contributing to cell death (Choi, 1990 Lipton, 2006 Lipton and Nicotera, 1998 Lynch and Guttmann, 2002).

Initially, Gly was described to be restricted to the mammalian spinal cord, but subsequently it has been detected supraspinally as well (Legendre, 2001). Gly receptors (GlyRs) belong to the superfamily of receptor channels, which are generally composed of five subunits (al-4, P) (Webb and Lynch, 2007). The different a-and P-subunits are differently localized. The GlyR is a pentameric chloride channel, and it is classically known for mediating inhibitory synaptic transmission between interneurons and motor neurons in reflex circuits of the spinal cord, but they are also found presynaptically, where they modulate neurotransmitter release (Lynch, 2009 Webb and Lynch, 2007). The picture is complicated by the fact that Gly also binds to and activates NMDA receptors, therefore, it can influence the pain threshold by this action as well (see above. Section 2.3.1) (Zeilhofer, 2005). 

Electron spin resonance (ESR) is a well-established experimental method that has conventionally been limited to 35 GHz and lower in frequency. During the course of the last decade, workers in a number of laboratories (Grinberg et ai, 1983 Haindl et al., 1985 Lynch, et al., 1988 Barra et al., 1990 Wang et al., 1994) developed instruments that have pushed the maximum observation frequency up to nearly 1 THz (1000 GHz). Pulse methods at frequencies up to 604 GHz also have been developed (Weber et al., 1989 Bresgunov et al., 1991 Prisner et al., 1992 Moll, 1994), as well as Electron Nuclear Double Resonance (ENDOR) (Burghaus et al., 1988). 

It is generally agreed on the basis of TEM evidence (e.g., Rask et ai, 1997) and on the basis of chemical substitution in the several structural sites of illite (e.g., Lanson and Champion, 1991 Awwiller, 1993 Lynch et ai, 1997) that the illitization of smectite, like other replacement reactions in late diagenesis, proceeds through a dissolution/precipitation mechanism. Similar to other replacement minerals, illite also occurs as cements in sandstones as well as in shales, where it forms overgrowths on detrital illite particles and discrete crystals (cements) (e.g., Lanson and Champion, 1991 Rask et at, 1997).
