The identity between aortic cell culture and bovine lung heparan sulphate is not fully proven yet. Apart from the determination of the molecular weight all analytic methods presented in this study, especially the in vitro blood testing indicates the high degree of similarity of the two substances. [Pg.225]

In the present paper a new method for the isolation of bovine lung endothelial cell surface heparan sulphate is described. The aim of this work was to investigate for an alternative source leading to ES-HS as described from bovine aortic cell culture. Because of the excellent properties cell culture ES-HS coating of biomaterials has shown in in vitro as well as in "in vivo" experiments, a commercially available source should be found. The solution presented in this work leads to sufficient amounts for technical application of the coating system, especially the isolation procedure bears the potential of a high degree of automation for industrial purposes. [Pg.225]

In the near future further investigations will be carried out such as testing of cytotoxicity, different methods of sterilisation (steam, y, EO) and animal experiments to become a better insight to the potential of bovine lung ES-HS. All these investigations already have been carried out successfully for the cell culture derived material and according to the similarity between the two substances we are hopeful to gain the same results as for bovine aortic endothelial surface heparan sulphate. [Pg.225]
