LUCA process

The Lanthaniden Und Curium Americium (LUCA) process is developed in Germany for the selective separation of Am(III) from the solution issued either from the DIAMEX-SANEX processes or the GANEX process. It uses a mixture of bis(chlorophenyl)dithip-hosphinic acid ((ClPh)2PSSH) and tris(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate (TEHP) as the extractant.

This is a well known work which was first published by Nicholas Bamaud in 1599. It consisted of a series of 15 verses outlining the alchemical process. It was later issued by Lucas Jennis as part of Dyas chymica tripartita, 1625, and this was illustrated with a series of 15 engravings, together with a symbolic coat-of-arms and a frontispiece". We see some similarities between the major life processes in plants (growth and differentiation) and the major life processes in animals and humans (proliferation and differentiation). We expect in future to relate this concept to animal production and to human health, to be able to cross the bridge from soil to plant to animal and finally human health. For example, the development in medicine of differentiation therapy in which vitamin A-derivates are used to treat human cancer cells in vitro (De Luca el al., 1995). Cancer is defined by too much uncontrolled growth of cells without enough differentiation. Using treatment with vitamin A-derivatives - a product of differentiation processes in the plant - undifferentiated cancer cells change into differentiated more healthy ones.

Lucas [Lurgi-Claus-Abgas-Schwefelgewinnung] A process for removing residual sulfur compounds from the tail gases from the Claus process. Generally, one would expect that the most volatile component would evaporate first, and this would probably be the diluent. In several cases of operating simulated solvent extraction processes at temperatures up to 70°C, it has been noted that the diluent is rapidly volatilized [G. M. Ritcey and B. H. Lucas, unpublished data]. Problems of volatilization appear not to have occurred to any great extent in the past (perhaps the losses were not measured), but any trend to the use of elevated temperatures would require that this form of solvent loss be thoroughly investigated.

Even though there are many leadership definitions, Komvies, Lucas, and McMahon (1998) noted several basic assumptions about leadership that are incorporated into the preceding definitions. These assumptions are that leadership is a learned behavior, is teachable, occurs at all levels of the organization, does not require a charismatic personality, is a relational process, is culturally influenced, requires followership, involves purposeful change that satisfies collective needs... 

Writing contemporaneously, Wolf De Luca said42 There is now, we believe, general agreement that vitamin A is to be regarded as a hormone rather than a vitamin in the classical sense of a conenzyme. By hormone we mean a substance secreted into the blood stream which influences tissues and organs so as to differentiate and elaborate new cell types and new enzymes. While the retinoids of vision are secreted into the blood stream in support of the above roles, those destined for use in the visual process are transported in a more sophisticated manner that isolates them from the blood stream.
