Surfactant low-foaming

Low-foaming surfactants can be produced by changing the structure of the surfactant molecule so that it retains its surface activity but produces an unstable foam. We mentioned above that if the surfactant is rapidly diffusing, it can destroy the elasticity of the surface film and thus prevent or minimize foaming.

Structures of some very low-foaming surfactants are listed in Table 7-3. These materials all produce foam that disappears completely, or almost completely, within a few minutes.

Chlebicki and Slipko [127] determined the foam ability of sodium propoxyl-ated alcohol sulfates by the Ross-Miles method. These substances are low-foaming surfactants the greatest foam height was observed for dodecyl and tetradecyl chains. As expected, as the number of polyoxypropylene units on the same alcohol chain increases, foam height decreases. The maximum foam height obtained was 225 mm for a 2 g/L solution of sodium tetradecyl (1 PrO) sulfate.

Bio-Terge PAS-8S serves as a good, low-foaming surfactant and hydrotrope in above formulation.

EO/PO/EO block copolymers are very low-foaming surfactants. As a result of hydrogen bonding, the ethoxylate chain (and to a lesser extent, the propoxylate chain) add structure to aqueous formulations, and are therefore used as thickening and gelling agents. They are also mild, but relatively expensive. 

Extremely low foaming surfactants and emulsifiers used in mechanical dishwashers, pressure sprays, rinse aids, and low foam cleaners.
