Pumps, lobe

Rota.ry Lobe Pumps. Rotary lobe pumps are similar to gear pumps in principle. These pumps have an added advantage of noncontacting metal parts by use of external gears, which reduces the wear, but adds complexity. Low wear and improved shear characteristics make these pumps apphcable to the food industry, where cleanliness and absence of contamination are required. These pumps produce a strong pulsing flow that must be addressed. [Pg.296]

A typical performance range of capacides of rotary lobe vacuum pumps is shown in Figures 6-48A, 6-48B and 6-48C. Another set of curves for rotary lobe pumps, shown in Figure 6-49, provides the brake horsepower, airflow at inlet (CFM) (referred to as their standard volume at 70°F and 29.92 inch Hg abs discharge pressure—essentially atmosphere), and the temperature rise through a non-cooled (no internal or external cooling) vacuum. Figures 8.5 and 8.6. The liquid is carried round in the spaces between consecutive gear teeth and the outer casing of the pump, and the seal between the high and low pressure sides of the pump is formed as the gears come into mesh and the elements of fluid are squeezed out. Gear pumps are extensively used for both high-viscosity Newtonian liquids and non-Newtonian fluids. The lobe-pump (Figures 8.7 and 8.8) is similar, but the gear... Figures 8.5 and 8.6. Gear pump—A pump that basically operate like a lobe pump, except that instead of lobes, gear teeth are used to move the fluid. [Pg.253]

Lobe pump—A positive-displacement pump whose impellers are shaped like lobes. [Pg.253]

Positive displacement pumps. The minimal shear operation of progressing cavity or lobe pumps make them ideal for slurries. The non-pulsating flow is beneficial in most processes, but they are significantly more expensive and less portable than diaphragm pumps. [Pg.246]

Mono-type pumps, lobe pumps or gear pumps (viking) are recommended for PAS paste duty. Pipe diameter selection has been discussed in section 5.6.1., chemical engineering aspects related to neutralisation reactor systems. [Pg.196]

Rotary lobe pumps are a special form of positive displacement pump. They feature two lobes (Figure 9-16) that rotate against each other like intermeshing gears. They are avail-... [Pg.507]
