Mazindol lithium

Other drugs of the depressant, antianxiety, antipyschotic, and anticonvulsive types are being investigated as treatments for cocaine abuse. Those which have been or will be covered in this course include the heterocyclic antidepressants desipramine and imipramine, which diminish cocaine use and craving as well as improve the outcome in the first few months of treatment. Buprenorphine (depressant) may augment the reward system (it has been found to suppress self-administration of cocaine in monkeys). Lithium sometimes works for those who are clinically depressives. Carbamazapine, bromocriptine and mazindol are also used as well as fluphenthixol and buspirone. 

There have been reports of lithium toxicity associated with the use of the appetite suppressant mazindol. 

A woman stabilized on lithium developed toxic symptoms 3 days after starting the appetite suppressant mazindol. After 9 days, her serum lithium concentration was 3.2 mmol/1 (655). 

A 58-year-old woman developed lithium toxicity (serum concentration 3.2 mmol/1) after the addition of mazindol (656).

Clinically important, potentially hazardous interactions with alprazolam, amphetamines, astemizole, clarithromycin, clozapine, desipramine, dexibuprofen, dextroamphetamine, diethylpropion, droperidol, duloxetine, erythromycin, haloperidol, imipramine, isocarboxazid, linezolid, lithium, MAO inhibitors, mazindol, meperidine, methamphetamine, midazolam, moclobemide, nortriptyline, phendimetrazine, phenelzine, phentermine, phenylpropanolamine, phenytoin, pimozide, pseudoephedrine, selegiline, serotonin agonists, sibutramine, St John s wort, sumatriptan, sympathomimetics, tramadol, tranylcypromine, trazodone, tricyclic antidepressants, troleandomycin, tryptophan, zolmitriptan... 

An isolated report describes a case of lithium toxicity, which was attributed to the concurrent use of mazindol.
