List servers

This book grew out of a collection of technical-support web pages. Those pages were also posted to the computational chemistry list server maintained by the Ohio Supercomputer Center. Many useful comments came from the subscribers of that list. In addition, thanks go to Dr. James F. Harrison at Michigan State University for providing advice born of experience. 

Unlike list servers, which disseminate information on a specific topic from one person to many, newsgroup servers (e.g., USENET) provide access to thousands of topic-based discussion group services that are open to everyone. Access is provided through a local host or news server machine.

List servers and newsgroups. A list server/mail server contains discussion group created to share ideas and knowledge on a subject LISTSERV is the most common list server program. A message sent to a list is copied and then forwarded by... 

The THERMAL list-server http //www.egr.msu.edu/mailman/listinfo/thermal initiated by Michael Rich at Michigan State University, provides a forum of experts willing to advise on thermoanalytical problems. 

The Thermal Methods Group maintains a web site, through the Royal Society of Chemistry at http //thermalmethodsgroup.org.uk and a list server whereby requests for information and queries about techniques may be exchanged. If you wish to join the TMG Internet Newsgroup, please follow the intructions on the TMG web site.

The IFMBE web site was moved from Amsterdam to Sweden in March 1999 and it got a new address, www.ifmbe.org. since it had been before under the lUPESM web address. In the AC-meeting in Seoul 1999 I presented an offer from a professional company to develop the web site. This offer included new layout, a discussion forum for the membership, an electronic meeting place for the committees and divisions, a news site for the membership, a message board, document archive and list-server function. Unfortunately this offer was tabled in Seoul and more offers were taken in late September 1999, but none of them were cheaper than the first one and none of them were accepted. Therefore, I decided to design and make the first step, i.e., the layout, of the new web site by myself. The new web site was launched on the Internet in December 1999.
