Solid-liquid extraction is applied on an industrial scale to produce oils and fats from oil-bearing seeds. In the food and flavour industry, extracts and resins, such as hop, chamomile, peppermint, valerian, vanilla, red pepper and liquorice, are obtained from herbs, roots, seeds and drugs. The technology has also found application in the pharmaceutical industry for the extraction of antibiotics, alkaloids and caffeine. 

In the early stages of the development of TLC, especially when used with drugs and their preparations, solvent systems were often used that consisted of the upper or lower phase of a mixture of solvents. Some of these can still be found in current monographs of the DAB. As an example of the use of a solvent system with an addition of acid, we describe here the identity test for primula root. An alkaline solvent system is prescribed for the test for liquorice root and liquid extracts prepared from it. As these upper and lower phases are difficult to handle and their compositions are very temperature sensitive, reproducible hRf values in the TLC can only be achieved at a constant... 

Turlington s Balsam is much like the compound tincture of benzoin of the Pharmacopceia of the U. S., though it is somewhat more complicated. To make it, take benzoin, 12 ounces liquid storax, 4 ounces balsam of Peru, 2 ounces myrrh and aloes, each 1 ounce balsam of tolu and extract of liquorice, each 4 ounces angelica root, t ounce alcohol, 8 pints. Digest for 10 days, and strain. 

The nitroso-phenol reaction, when applied to extractives of chlorodyne, is subject to interference from substances other than morphine present in the residue. Garratt- drew attention to apparent morphine contents of treacle. McLachlan " reported the interference from liquorice as being due to the colour which develops with ammonia and glycyrrhizin and some of its hydrolysis products. The apparent morphine contents of both treacle and liquid extract of liquorice were also reported on in 1956. By the extraction procedure detailed below morphine can be separated from the substances present in liquorice which give a yellow colour with ammonia and the iodic acid-nickel chloride reaction may then be applied.
