Liquids, semisolids

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) was enacted in 1976 and was revised substantially by the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendment (HSWA) of 1984 (40 CFR pts. 260-280). The RCRA regulates the management of solid wastes that are hazardous. The definition of solid wastes in these regulations generally encompasses all discarded materials (including solid, liquid, semisolid, and contained gaseous materials) and many secondary materials (e.g., spent solvents, byproducts) that are recycled or reused rather than discarded [3]. Products such as commercial pesticides are not ordinarily solid wastes, but they become solid wastes if and when they are discarded or stored, treated, or transported prior to such disposal.

The higher viscosity of semisolid dosage forms and transdermal systems may cause the rate of migration of leachable substances into these dosage forms to be slower than for aqueous solutions. Due to extended contact, the amount of leach-ables in these drug products may depend more on a leachable material s affinity for the liquid/semisolid phase than on the rate of migration. 

Fig. 3 shows a pilot plant layout with restricted personnel access. This design would support the development and clinical manufacture of solid dosage forms, liquids, semisolids, aerosols, and sterile products. Multipurpose rooms are incorporated in each area to maximize the use of portable equipment, and scale factors similar to those shown in Table 1 are employed. Isolation suites are indicated in the manufacturing area their purpose and design are discussed in more detail later. The sterile area is isolated from the main corridor by the interior corridor design. At the far left, the main corridor provides access for future facility expansion, if necessary. 

All sample types are amenable to SPE with suitable handling solids, liquids, semisolids, etc. Solid-phase extraction is extensively used in sample preparation, as it offers a fast, safe, and convenient means for subsequent analysis by chromatographic techniques [HPLC, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), GC, etc.]. ASTM (1) further classifies asphalts or bituminous materials as solids, semisolids, or liquids. Semisolid and liquid asphalts predominate in commercial practice today. Prior to 1907, the principal portion of asphalt used occurred naturally since that time most asphalts have been produced from the refining of petroleum. Air-blown petroleum asphalts (5) of diverse hardness became available in the early 1900s, and as their use increased, the demand for native products diminished. 

The storage of liquid, semisolids, or product materials in a vessel that may or may not have temperature control or agitation is called holding.

Bracketing design is applicable to most types of drug products, including immediate- and modified-release oral solids, liquids, semisolids, and injectables. Certain types of drug products, such as MDIs, DPIs, and transdermal delivery systems, may not be amenable to, or may need additional justification for, bracketing design. 

These state that generators that transport hazardous waste or offer it for transportation, offsite treatment, storage, or disposal must use a manifest so that the shipment is tracked from generation through to final disposition. The EPA s hazardous wastes are subsets of solid wastes, which include solids, liquids, semisolids, or gaseous materials that are discarded, abandoned, recycled, or inherently waste-like and are not otherwise excluded. 

On the basis of physical state, SNEDDS are categorized into liquid, semisolid, and solid SNEDDS (S-SNEDDS). By employing the technological innovations and functional excipients, semisolid and solid SNEDDS are further subdivided into pellets, spray dried powders, gastroretentive tablets, minicapsules, etc. (Bansal et al., 2008 Singh et al., 2014). The detailed descriptions and applications of the various SNEDDS formulations are discussed below.
