More and more lines of evidence support a rationale that lipids are associated with many human diseases (e.g., diabetes and obesity, atherosclerosis and stroke, cancer, psychiatric disorders, neurodegenerative diseases and neurological disorders, and infectious diseases) (see Chapter 17). Therefore, the research on lipids has become a unique new discipline called lipidomics nowadays. [Pg.3]

Lipidomics smdy has been broadly applied to explore the metabolic origin of diabetes and obesity eomplieations. For example, lipidomic analysis of lipid extracts from white adipose tissue in young healthy monozygous twins with different body weights was performed [20]. The study led to a finding that obese co-twins compared to... [Pg.380]

Han, X., Yang, J., Cheng, H., Yang, K., Abendschein, D.R. and Gross, R.W. (2005) Shotgun lipidomics identifies cardiolipin depletion in diabetic myocardium linking altered substrate utilization with mitochondrial dysfunction. Biochemistry 44,16684-16694. [Pg.394]

Recent methodological developments in MS have made quantitative analysis of the complex lipidomes of mammalian cells and tissues feasible for the first time. Phospholipids can already be analyzed in a routine manner and the analysis of most other lipid classes should be possible as soon as some issues regarding quantification, particularly the availability of suitable standards, have been resolved. A detailed analysis of lipidomes is expected to provide a powerful tool for the diagnosis and understanding of the mechanism of various lipid-related diseases and disorders, including atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes. This, however, will require integration of the lipidomics data with those of genomics, proteomics, and other omics, which may not be trivial. [Pg.240]
