The lipids in the blood during fasting consist largely of phospholipids, cholesterol, and cholesterol esters and almost no triglycerides. After a fat meal, glycerides in the blood increase 300 to 500 mg. per 100 ml. Maximum hyperlipemia is observed 23 to 3 hr. after ingestion of a moderate amount of fat and the fasting level is attained by the fifth hour (Chapter 7). Hyperlipemia depends upon the rate of removal of fat from the blood as well as on the rate of intake. Administration of heparin has been shown to prevent normal alimentary lipemia. This action may be related to the beneficial effect of heparin reported by Jones and associates in patients with atherosclerosis, namely, reduction in the level of certain lipoproteins in the blood.
