Linking forms

In the first instance we define some subquotient groups of S A, which are needed to define the various types of linking form that arise in the localization exact sequences of Witt groups. [Pg.222]

For example, an c-symmetric linking form over (E,E- 0)) (M,X) is the same as a finite abelian group M together with a bilinear e-symmetric pairing [Pg.223]

An E-quadratic linking form over (A.S) (M,X,m) is an even E-symmetric linking form over (A,S) (M,X) together with a funct [Pg.223]

Thi3 definition is due to Wall [21 (in the special case (A,S) = (Still/E- 0)) arising in odd-dimensional surgery obstruction theory). if a is a commutative ting with the identity involution a = a 6 A (a G A) and 1/2 G S a quadrat linking form over (A,S) (M,i,u) (e = 16A) consists of an (A,S)-module M together with a function [Pg.224]

Originally, vulcanization implied heating natural rubber with sulfur, but the term is now also employed for curing polymers. When sulfur is employed, sulfide and disulfide cross-links form between polymer chains. This provides sufficient rigidity to prevent plastic flow. Plastic flow is a process in which coiled polymers slip past each other under an external deforming force when the force is released, the polymer chains do not completely return to their original positions. [Pg.1011]

Condensation cure can also be carried out ia emulsions (200—209). In this case, the cross-linker and polydimethylsiloxanediol are emulsified usiag anionic, cationic, or nonionic surfactants ia water, and a condensation catalyst such as dibutyltin dilaurate is added. The polymer can then undergo cross-linking, forming a continuous film when the water is evaporated. [Pg.49]

The epoxidised oils are seldom used in a cross-linked form as the products are rather soft and leathery. Exceptions to this are their occasional use as diluents for more viscous resins and some applications in adhesive formulations. [Pg.767]

Vulcanization changes the physical properties of rubbers. It increases viscosity, hardness, modulus, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and decreases elongation at break, compression set and solubility in solvents. All those changes, except tensile strength, are proportional to the degree of cross-linking (number of crosslinks) in the rubber network. On the other hand, rubbers differ in their ease of vulcanization. Since cross-links form next to carbon-carbon double bonds. [Pg.638]

Chcmically, Bakelite is a phenolic resin, produced by reaction of phenol and formaldehyde. On heating, water is eliminated, many cross-links form, and the polymer sets into a rocklike mass. The cross-linking in Bakelite and other thermosetting resins is three-dimensional and is so extensive that we can t really speak of polymer "chains." A piece of Bakelite is essentially one large molecule. [Pg.1218]

Such functionality can also be of great practical importance since functional initiators, transfer agents, etc. are applied to prepare end-functional polymers (see Section 7.5) or block or graft copolymers (Section 7.6). In these cases the need to maximize the fraction of chains that contain the reactive or other desired functionality is obvious. However, there are also well-documented cases where weak links formed by initiation, termination, or abnormal propagation processes impair the thermal or photochemical stability of polymers. [Pg.414]

Centronuclear myopathy with type 1 fiber hypotrophy is sometimes regarded as a separate entity because many cases show central nuclei only in the hypotrophic type 1 fibers, while the type 2 fibers are morphologically normal. Affected type 1 fibers are even more myotubelike than in other variants of the disorder, with the exception of the severe X-linked form, due to the persistence of a mitochondria-rich core within a peripheral ring of myofibrils. These features are clearly demonstrable using histochemical methods for the localization of SDH activity and myofibrillar ATPase, respectively. [Pg.295]

The severe X-linked form of centronuclear myopathy is often associated with reduced fetal movement and hydramnios, and may be fatal in the neonatal period due to respiratory failure. Children may survive for several years but often only with assisted ventilation. In only a few reported cases has the condition allowed any form of active life. Female relatives may show a carrier state characterized by the presence of some small myotubelike type 1 fibers in an otherwise normal muscle fiber population. [Pg.295]

Both dynamic permanent set and oil swell resistance are improved on addition of Perkalink 900, indicative of the greater thermal and mechanochemical strength of the cross-links formed from Perkalink 900 compared to sulfidic cross-links. Data are shown in Figures 14.25 and 14.26. [Pg.457]

Collagen triple helices are stabilized by hydrogen bonds between residues in dijferent polypeptide chains. The hydroxyl groups of hydroxyprolyl residues also participate in interchain hydrogen bonding. Additional stability is provided by covalent cross-links formed between modified lysyl residues both within and between polypeptide chains. [Pg.38]

After secretion from the cell, certain lysyl residues of tropoelastin are oxidatively deaminated to aldehydes by lysyl oxidase, the same enzyme involved in this process in collagen. However, the major cross-links formed in elastin are the desmosines, which result from the condensation of three of these lysine-derived aldehydes with an unmodified lysine to form a tetrafunctional cross-hnk unique to elastin. Once cross-linked in its mature, extracellular form, elastin is highly insoluble and extremely stable and has a very low turnover rate. Elastin exhibits a variety of random coil conformations that permit the protein to stretch and subsequently recoil during the performance of its physiologic functions. [Pg.539]

This process of cross-linking does not appear have a major effect on protein secondary structure at room temperature. However, cross-links formed by reactions of formaldehyde with proteins retard, but do not eliminate, protein denaturation that occurs when proteins are heated to a temperature of approximately 70°C or above.7... [Pg.324]

Any quant is linked with other quants. The quant gets its supplies from them or delivers to them. Along the link travels a certain quantity of material. Additionally a link describes the dependencies of the two quants, for example minimum or maximum offset time. Quants and links form the quant network. This link type is called a quant link. Quant links may be added or deleted at any time, depending on the process of satisfying the given constraints. [Pg.61]
