Linear Interaction Approximation continuum solvent

In this chapter we consider the extension of continuum solvent models to nonlocal theories in the framework of the linear response approximation (LRA). Such an approximation is mainly applicable to electrostatic solute-solvent interactions, which usually obey the LRA with reasonable accuracy. The presentation is confined to this case. [Pg.94]

Continuum solvation models consider the solvent as a homogeneous, isotropic, linear dielectric medium [104], The solute is considered to occupy a cavity in this medium. The ability of a bulk dielectric medium to be polarized and hence to exert an electric field back on the solute (this field is called the reaction field) is determined by the dielectric constant. The dielectric constant depends on the frequency of the applied field, and for equilibrium solvation we use the static dielectric constant that corresponds to a slowly changing field. In order to obtain accurate results, the solute charge distribution should be optimized in the presence of the field (the reaction field) exerted back on the solute by the dielectric medium. This is usually done by a quantum mechanical molecular orbital calculation called a self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) calculation, which is iterative since the reaction field depends on the distortion of the solute wave function and vice versa. While the assumption of linear homogeneous response is adequate for the solvent molecules at distant positions, it is a poor representation for the solute-solvent interaction in the first solvation shell. In this case, the solute sees the atomic-scale charge distribution of the solvent molecules and polarizes nonlinearly and system specifically on an atomic scale (see Figure 3.9). It should be emphasized that this description of solvation as a purely electrostatic process is greatly over-simplified. Short-range interactions exist as well, and the physical exclusion of the solvent from the space occupied by the solute must have its own dynamics. Still, for solvation of ions and dipolar molecules in polar solvents electrostatic solvent-solute and solvent-solvent interactions dominate, and disregarding short-range effects turns out to be a reasonable approximation. Of main concern should be the use of continuum electrostatics to describe a local molecular process and the fact that the tool chosen is a linear response theory. Implicit solvation models developed for condensed phases represent the solvent by a continuous electric field, and are based on the Poisson equation, which is valid when a surrounding dielectric medium responds linearly to the charge distribution of the solute. The Poisson equation is actually a special case of the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation PB electrostatics applies when electrolytes are present in solution, while the Poisson equation applies when no ions are present. Solving the Poisson equation for an arbitrary equation requires numerical methods, and many researchers have developed an alternative way to approximate the Poisson equation that can be solved analytically, known as the Generalized Born (GB) approach. The most common implicit models used for small molecules are the Conductor-like Screening Model (COSMO) [96,97], the Dielectric Polarized Continuum Model (DPCM) [98], the Conductor-like modification to the Polarized Continuum Model (CPCM) [99], the Integral Equation Formalism implementation of PCM (lEF-PCM) [100] PB models and the GB SMx models of Cramer and Truhlar [52,57,101,102]. The newest Miimesota solvation models are the SMD (universal Solvation Model based on solute electron Density [57]) and the SMLVE method, which combines the surface and volume polarization for electrostatic interactions model (SVPE) [103-105] with semiempirical terms that account for local electrostatics [106].
