Sprays Medicated liquids prepared for dispersal by atomizers or nebulizers, usually on external surface or mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. In the United States Pharmacopoeia, sprays were called inhalatio the National Formulary referred to them as nebulae. Sprays of the early twentieth century were formulated with aromatics dissolved in light mineral oil. The X-rays emitted from the surface of a sample in both SEM and TEM can be used diagnostically to determine the partition of species, since they are characteristic of the elements in the sample. This process is known as EDAX (energy dispersive analysis of X-rays) and can be performed not only on areas of sample but also on individual crystallites, although light elements (with atomic numbers less than sodium) cannot be assessed as the X-rays produced are too soft and are easily absorbed. [Pg.72]

Dispersive Instruments. In dispersive instruments monochromators are employed for selection of the wavelength. When a line-like radiation source is employed, a monochromator of low resolution is adequate, but for a continuum radiation source a high resolution monochromator is required. In dispersive equipment the exit slit width is narrower than that in non-dispersive equipment. In this way, thermal background emission and stray light originating from the atomizer can be considerably decreased, but at the same time the optical transmission also decreases. Titanium dioxide (hut more importantly titanium-containing materials with more dispersed titanium atoms) shows potential for use in the fixation of carbon dioxide via photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbon monoxide, formic acid, methanol, and methane. Such an artificial photosynthesis of carbon-containing compounds would obviously be extremely valuable both in the production of solar fuels and the amelioration of the effects of carbon dioxide in global warming and it can be expected that these efforts will continue to grow. Again the process is initiated by UV light to promote an electron from the VB to the CB.
