The powder contains 0.5 and 0.3 water molecule per europium(III) clathrochelate molecule at 300 K and 4.2 K, respectively, and the quantum yields were calculated to be 0.56 and 0.65, respectively. These values practically coincide with the experimental data. The observed deviation of the quantum yield from 100% for this solid sample is caused by the presence of solvate water molecules [391], The decrease in the luminescence quantum yield in aqueous solutions is also largely caused by an increase in the number of water molecules around the clathrochelate complex. Close to unity luminescence yield for terbium(III) clathrochelate powder may be attributed to the absence of water in this sample. A number of other up-conversion processes are known. The blue emission from a Yb3+/Tm3+ couple in which the active emitters are defect Tm3+ centers is mainly due to the efficient excitation ET process from Yb3+ centers. Two-frequency up-conversion has been investigated using Pr3+ defects in a fluoride glass matrix. Illumination with one pump wavelength results in GSA, while simultaneous irradiation with a second pump wavelength further excites the GSA centers via ESA. The doubly excited defects emit red light. Up-conversion and visible output only takes place at the intersection of the two beams. [Pg.428]

Overall, this work highlights how quantum chemical methods can be used to study tribochemical reactions within chemically complex lubricant systems. The results shed light on processes that are responsible for the conversion of loosely connected ZP molecules derived from anti-wear additives into stiff, highly connected anti-wear films, which is consistent with experiments. Additionally, the results explain why these films inhibit wear of hard surfaces, such as iron, yet do not protect soft surface such as aluminum. The simulations also explained a large number of other experimental observations pertaining to ZDDP anti-wear films and additives.103 Perhaps most importantly, the simulations demonstrate the importance of cross-linking within the films, which may aid in the development of new anti-wear additives. [Pg.119]
