The legs of the platform can be used as settling tanks or temporary storage facilities for crude oil where oil is exported via tankers, or to allow production to continue in the event of a pipeline shut down. The Brent D platform in the North Sea weighs more than 200,000 tonnes and can store over a million barrels of oil. Topside modules are either installed offshore by lift barges, or can be positioned before the platform is floated out. [Pg.266]

Artificial lift techniques are discussed in Section 9.6. During production, the operating conditions of any artificial lift technique will be optimised with the objective of maximising production. For example, the optimum gas-liquid ratio will be applied for gas lifting, possibly using computer assisted operations (CAO) as discussed in Section 11.2. Artificial lift may not be installed from the beginning of a development, but at the point where the natural drive energy of the reservoir has reduced. The role that a host facility plays in an incremental development project can vary tremendously. At one extreme all production and processing support may be provided by the host (such as gas lift and water treatment). Floor scales are platform scales which are permanently installed in a pit, flush with the floor, or which sit on the floor. These scales typically range in capacity from 500 kg to 30 t, and in size up to that required to accommodate a fork-lift tmck. [Pg.332]

Conveyor-belt speeds above approximately 300 ft per minute (1.5 meters per second) impart sufficient momentum to material discharging at its head pulley to cause lifting of material streams in a trajectory from the head pulley. Lift-truck operation is veiy simple and produc tive, even at 7-m (20-ft) elevations. Aisle racks can be as high as 30 m (100 ft), but above 7 m stacker cranes are favored over hft trucks because cranes allow seiwicing high storage at high rates. New types of anodes have been developed and tested as shown in Fig. 16-5 to improve the possibility of maintenance and repair. They can be lifted onto a ship and repaired. The connecting cables are also replaceable. In shallow water, the anchorage must be accurately calculated because considerable dynamic stressing can occur in heavy seas. The ocean floor must be suitable for long-term anchorage. No supply ships must anchor in the area around the platform. This requirement alone often prevents the installation of impressed current anodes since the operator does not wish or is not able to restrict himself to these conditions. [Pg.375]

Lift a ceiling tile and examine the plenum for potential problems. Walls or full-height partitions that extend to the floor above can obstruct or divert air movement in ceiling plenums unless transfer grilles have been provided. If fire dampers have been installed to allow air circulation through walls or partitions, confirm that the dampers are open. Balanced Bellows Safety Relief Valve - A balanced safety relief valve incorporates means for minimizing the effect of back pressure on the performance characteristics opening pressure, closing pressure, lift and relieving capacity. If the previous system were at sea level, consider the same pump with the same system at an altitude of 6000 feet. Here the barometric pressure is 27.4 feet of water. Water connections to a shell-and-tube condenser must always be arranged so that the end covers can easily be removed for inspection, cleaning, and repair of the tubes. Heavy end covers require the use of lifting tackle, and supports above the lifting points should be provided on installation to facilitate this work. [Pg.77]

It is sometimes necessary to assist the distribution of air from the cooler by installing air ducting. This can take the form of individual ducts, but these are prone to damage from fork-lift trucks. Alternatively, a full or partial false ceiling, below the insulated surface. [Pg.185]
