Lettering, recessed

Alleles are classified by how they interact with each other. The red-hair allele is recessive —i.e., one such gene on each member of the chromosome pair is required for the trait to be manifest. The nonred-hair allele, in contrast, is dominant —i.e., a person with either one or two of these genes has nonred hair. It is customary to designate dominant alleles with capital letters and recessive alleles with lower-case letters. If r stands for the red-hair gene and R for its alternative, rr persons will have red hair, and Rr and RR will not. 

In the context of the GA, diploidy offers another method to maintain genetic diversity. The crossover operator is replaced by the fertilization operator which takes two diploid chromosomes and trades gametes, or half chromosomes (see Figure 7). A simple binary representation of the diploid chromosome uses a three-letter alphabet where a —1 implies a dominant 1, a 1 implies a recessive 1, and a 0 implies a 0. The dominance matrix is... 

A raised letter is visible only if it is at least 3 mil high. Letters that are over 30 mil high should be tapered and have fillets at the base. Raised letters can be decorated or painted by roll coating. With depressed letters, the surface of the part is spray painted and the excess wiped away, leaving paint in the recess.
