Let s consider an industrial boiler. You may need at least three of these previous mentioned o-rings just to prevent leaks and drips in a simple hydronie or steam boiler. Raw water comes into the boiler room with pipes, gauges, valves and instrumentation. All these fittings would probably use Nitrile rubber o-ring seals to give long-term leak free service. [Pg.206]

Solvents can damage parts of your system such as O-rings, causing a greater leak than the one you were originally trying to find. When an SRV is subject to a minor pressure relief situation, the disc may only lift enough to cause a slighdy audible escape of fluid or visible drip (if liquid). This may relieve the system pressure, but the valve does not significantly pop or lift open. Under this condition, with metal seats the disc may not reseat properly and the valve may continue to leak below the system normal operating pressure. Testing for structural integrity and testing for tiny leaks sometimes require two different approaches. Sometimes it is necessary to find leaks in systems such as a heat exchanger, which has hundreds of tubes rolled into a tube sheet. Water drips from a hydrotest may be hard to see or correct. At other times you may need to test gasketed systems that will not tolerate moisture. [Pg.224]

If you know you have a leak but are not sure of the location, do not use a flame to aid your search. If the gas is flammable, the dangers are obvious, but otherwise there is concern of burning parts and equipment. The best and safest technique is to spray, squirt, or drip a soapy water solution on the suspected area. Use either a diluted liquid dish soap or a commercial solution such as Snoop . The evidence of bubbles is a sure sign of a leak. However, be sure you witness bubble formation as opposed to bubbles just sitting there, which are likely to have formed during the application of the bubble solution. [Pg.284]

Leak detection starts with simple observation of the pressure gauge at intervals. If during any part of the process you notice pressure decay that is not a normal part of the system s cycle, you have a leak. A visual check of the fittings and connections may show a leak if fluid KOH is involved. You can see it flowing or dripping out from the area where the fitting is connected, or see a damp spot beneath it. A hissing sound is also an indicator of a leak. [Pg.54]
