Organic lead poisoning

There are dozens of organizations in the country that are fighting lead poisoning. To learn if there is a lead poisoning organization in your state, see Appendix A. 

Arming parents with information on how to minimize the risk of lead poisoning to their children, or to cope with a lead poisoning crisis, is a common goal of lead poisoning organizations.

Occasionally the alimentary symptoms are relatively slight and are overshadowed by neuromuscular dysfunction, accompanied by signs of motor weakness, which may progress to paralysis of the extensor muscles of the wrist ( wrist drop ) and less often of the ankles ( foot drop ). In plants, algae and many bacteria there is an alternative route for ALA synthesis that involves the conversion of the intact five-carbon skeleton of glutamate in a series of three steps to yield ALA. In all organisms, two molecules of ALA then condense to form porphobilinogen in a reaction catalyzed by ALA dehydratase (also called porphobilinogen synthase) (Fig. 2a). Inhibition of this enzyme by lead is one of the major manifestations of acute lead poisoning. 

Ordinarily, drinking water has no action on lead, but if the solvent power is increased by the presence of an excess of gases or of organic matter containing sodium or potassium nitrate, enough lead compound may be taken up by the water to cause lead poisoning when the water is drunk.
