Ernest Orlando Lawrence

After American physicist Ernest Orlando Lawrence invented the cyclotron three years earlier, the E. O. Lawrence Cyclotron becomes operational. It helps scientists discover what an atom is composed of, how it behaves, and how its energy can be tapped. Construction of Grand Coulee Dam begins. Originally built to meet irrigation needs, it has more electric generating capacity than any dam in North America by 1975. [Pg.1240]

The University of California cyclotrons were major features in Sam Ruben s education and in his research at Berkeley. In 1928 at age twenty-seven, Ernest Orlando Lawrence left Yale University for the University of California at Berkeley to become an Associate Professor of Physics, and at age twenty-nine he was promoted to Full Professor. Also in 1928, Robert Oppenheimer joined the physics department at Berkeley as an assistant professor. By that time, a great deal was known about the structure of atoms there is an extremely small dense central nucleus and a diffuse cloud of electrons distributed about the nucleus. Physicists, then, were strongly interested in developing methods to explore the nature of the nucleus, especially at Cambridge, England, but also at top physics departments in other European countries and... [Pg.94]

Ernest Orlando Lawrence was a pioneer of big science, the use of com-pbcated and expensive instrumentation by large teams of researchers. He is best known for inventing the cyclotron, one of the first and most successful atom smashers. With this particle accelerator, Lawrence and his colleagues were able to make new radioactive isotopes, synthesize transuranium... [Pg.716]

Seaborg worked hard to ensure that science education was not slighted and that science would be seen as a tremendous boon to humanity. Along these lines, it was his leadership that helped to bring into existence the Lawrence Hall of Science at Berkeley as a tribute to Ernest Orlando Lawrence, see also Americium Curium Lawrence, Ernest Plutonium. [Pg.1137]
