Grand Coulee Dam

After American physicist Ernest Orlando Lawrence invented the cyclotron three years earlier, the E. O. Lawrence Cyclotron becomes operational. It helps scientists discover what an atom is composed of, how it behaves, and how its energy can be tapped. Construction of Grand Coulee Dam begins. Originally built to meet irrigation needs, it has more electric generating capacity than any dam in North America by 1975.

The largest hydroelectric power plant in the United States is located on the Columbia River in northern Washington State at the Grand Coulee Dam.
