Latex allergy The needle cover of the prefilled syringe contains natural rubber (latex), which may cause allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to this substance. 

Latex-free gloves are often made of polyurethane, which cause fewer allergic reactions. These polyurethane materials can be used with oil- or water-based creams and ointments, and they deteriorate less in storage.

Latex is present in many medical devices, including surgical and examination gloves, catheters, intubation tubes, anesthesia masks, and dental fillers. Reported allergic reactions range from contact urticaria to anaphylaxis (1).

Precautions Could cause allergic reaction to skin that comes in contact with latex. Sixteen deaths attributed to latex in 1990. Simple allergy results in skin welts, reddening and blistering as well as other respiratory problems. Severe problems with fatal reactions can occur from breathing problems and blood pressure drop. It can lead to anaphylaxis. Some believe the allergy is from the chemicals added in processing.
