Gloves, latex-free

Latex-free gloves are often made of polyurethane, which cause fewer allergic reactions. These polyurethane materials can be used with oil- or water-based creams and ointments, and they deteriorate less in storage. 

Use latex-free gloves when performing this procedure. 

In the event of conjunctivitis and/or rhinitis, the patient must use latex-free gloves and avoid contact with other latex objects. He does not have to change his work site. Powder-free gloves should be adopted by the other colleagues. 

In the event of mild asthma, in addition to the above measures, latex-free gloves must also be used by the other workers in the department.

For applications where surgical gloves provide adequate protection, if these are of natural rubber latex tlien powder-free gloves witli low/undetectable protein and allergen levels are advisable. (Alternatively the use of nitrile gloves eliminates the risk of latex allergy.)...

Another problem is that some persons are allergic to the proteins often found in natural rubber. This can be avoided by the use of a polyurethane condom. Unfortunately, as now made, these are more likely to tear (7-9% of the time) than the rubber latex condoms (2% of the time).65 It has been suggested that they be made of guayule rubber latex, which is free of the allergens.66 Thermoplastic elastomers, such as polystyrene-6-(ethylene-co-butene)-Apolystyr ene have been used to make gloves that are more resistant to ozone than those made of natural rubber.67 These should resist aging better than those made of natural rubber. It should be possible to mold a condom without holes from a thermoplastic rubber.

The St Joseph s team took the lesson of standardization to heart. Rooms have a standard layout, standard placement of switches, charts, controls and equipment even latex gloves are stored in the same place in each room. Medication processes and systems are standardized as far as possible and they are moving towards standard IV lines, beds, monitors and other equipment. For both patients and staff everything is predictable and in its place, which reduces error and waste and frees time for direct patient care.

Powder-free gloves should be used to reduce the risk of symptoms such as rhinitis, conjunctivitis and asthma caused by glove powder contaminated by latex proteins.
