Language levels

Do not use language primitive casts to access other interfaces of a component, because they would understand only language-level objects. Instead, there is a prescribed explicit query protocol for getting to other interfaces. [Pg.423]

On the other hand, lecturers or teachers for beginners should carefully separate the language levels in their lessons - for example (see also Sect. 2.5) ... [Pg.128]

Sodium has a melting point of 98°C. The mentioned 11 protons are not to be related to sodium but to the nucleus of one Na atom or one Na+ ion. It is important to carefully differentiate these different language levels at the beginning of lessons. Teachers should note the differences carefully so that students avoid the potential misconceptions. [Pg.128]

Further standard voltages could be measured and placed into an electrochemical sequence with other pairs of half-cells, as can be found in many chemistry teaching books. The extent of the introduction of the hydrogen half-cell as a standard electrode can be determined in each individual lesson. If one consequently describes all redox reactions in relation to the metal sequence, redox or electrochemical sequence with ions and offers the students model drawings (see Figs. 8.3 and 8.4), then the electron transfer and the redox definition, in terms of involved smallest particles, becomes even clearer and the mixing at the language level of substances and that of particles can be effectively suppressed. [Pg.223]

By electronic engineering, a system of interconnected switching devices is able to respond in one of only two modes (on or off), and these modes can be controlled at the basic level of a bit. Bits are assembled into bytes, as with an 8-bit device, and through programming of the bytes a computer central processor can be made to follow sets of instructions (programs) written in special languages, either at a direct level (machine code) that can be acted upon immediately by a computer or at a high level that is translated for the user into machine code. [Pg.310]

This big increase in speed has not been without cost. The everyday machine codes and high-level languages (Fortran, Pascal, C, etc.) used to control operations in a standard computer are inappropriate for parallel processing, which needs its own instruction set and has led to the development of special languages for use with the transputer. [Pg.314]

Some of this control is completely automatic and is called the operating system. Generally, it cannot be altered by the user, and it uses a low-level machine language (machine code), which enables the fastest response to commands. [Pg.419]

Software programs are usually written in a more user-friendly high-level language such as Fortran, Pascal, or C, which facilitates the tedious and labor-intensive task of writing a computer program. [Pg.419]

Although much easier to assemble, a software program written in a high-level language requires more time for the computer to execute, since all the instructions must be translated into machine code before the computer can understand them. Even a simple statement like start in a high-level language requires several machine-code moves to execute. [Pg.419]

There is an intimate connection at the molecular level between diffusion and random flight statistics. The diffusing particle, after all, is displaced by random collisions with the surrounding solvent molecules, travels a short distance, experiences another collision which changes its direction, and so on. Such a zigzagged path is called Brownian motion when observed microscopically, describes diffusion when considered in terms of net displacement, and defines a three-dimensional random walk in statistical language. Accordingly, we propose to describe the net displacement of the solute in, say, the x direction as the result of a r -step random walk, in which the number of steps is directly proportional to time ... [Pg.628]

Technical language and jargon are useful as professional shorthand, but they are barriers to successful communication with the public. Use simple, nontechnical language and vivid, concrete images that communicate on a personal level. Avoid distant, abstract, unfeeling language about deaths, injuries, and illnesses. [Pg.62]

Human factors considerations include determining the characteristics of the population in the area where the facility will draw its labor force. Factors such as educational levels, languages, norms, and environmental conditions should be considered because they can have a significant impact on later stages of the design process. [Pg.351]
