Based upon these results we decided to proceed with a long-term hippocampal stimulation protocol to demonstrate that chronic hippocampal stimulation (CHCS) may produce a sustained antiepileptic effect without undesirable effects on language and memory. The APTS was designed for portability works on IBM PC compatible systems running on a standard MS DOS operating system.53 The battery measures abilities of motor function, focused attention, selective attention, acquisition, and memory, as well as spatial perception and reasoning, mathematical calculation, and other language skills.4 7 Similar to most of the computerized performance assessment batteries, additions and deletions of individual components have occurred as the battery has matured and been used in different applications. 

The Delta system contains many of the same tests contained in the APTS system, including those that monitor motor function, reaction time, attention and working memory, learning and memory, spatial perception and reasoning, mathematical calculation, and language (Table 6.1). A study conducted in Britain reported that ketamine s impact on short- and long-term memory can linger for up to three days after a dose. Researchers looked at a broad array of memory functions, word association and language tests, attention span, and other factors related to mood. Though some recovery was noted 72 hours after ketamine usage, the researchers noted lasting impairments related to language and some aspects of memory. 

Animals certainly can t report dreams even if they do have them. But which pet owner would doubt that his or her favourite animal friend has perception, memory, and emotion These are three of the key aspects of consciousness, and they could be experienced whether or not an animal had verbal language as we do. When the animal s brain is activated during sleep, why not assume that the animal has some sort of perceptual, emotional, and memory experience ... 

On each experimental day, the Repeatable Battery for Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was administered (Randolph, 1998). It assesses attention, immediate memory, visuospatial/ construction, language, and delayed memory (Gold et al., 1999). Schizophrenics score significantly lower than normal subjects the decrement is correlated with diminished psychosocial status. Compared to placebo, the DMXB-A significantly improved overall performance and specifically improved function on the Attention subscale. Inhibition of the P50 response to repeated stimulus, the sensory gating measure that led to identification of nicotinic receptor deficits in schizophrenia, also improved (Olincy et al., 2006).
