Monolayers Langmuir—Blodgett film

D. Langmuir-Blodgett Films Monolayers of Fatty Acids... [Pg.397]

Films spread at liquid-liquid interfaces or on liquids other than water are discussed followed by the important effects of charged monolayers on water. Finally, the most technologically important application of Langmuir films, the Langmuir-Blodgett film deposited on a solid substrate, is reviewed. [Pg.537]

Deposited Langmuir-Blodgett films take on many of the same stmctures as the Langmuir monolayers discussed in Section IV-4C, and they are often compared to the self-assembling monolayers described in Section XI-IB. The area... [Pg.558]

C2.4 Organics films (Langmuir-Blodgett films and self-assembled monolayers)... [Pg.2608]

Langmuir-Blodgett films (LB) and self assembled monolayers (SAM) deposited on metal surfaces have been studied by SERS spectroscopy in several investigations. For example, mono- and bilayers of phospholipids and cholesterol deposited on a rutile prism with a silver coating have been analyzed in contact with water. The study showed that in these models of biological membranes the second layer modified the fluidity of the first monolayer, and revealed the conformation of the polar head close to the silver [4.300]. [Pg.262]

General Properties of Monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett Films of C60 and C70... [Pg.99]

As this volume attests, a wide range of chemistry occurs at interfacial boundaries. Examples range from biological and medicinal interfacial problems, such as the chemistry of anesthesia, to solar energy conversion and electrode processes in batteries, to industrial-scale separations of metal ores across interfaces, to investigations into self-assembled monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett films for nanoelectronics and nonlinear optical materials. These problems are based not only on structure and composition of the interface but also on kinetic processes that occur at interfaces. As such, there is considerable motivation to explore chemical dynamics at interfaces. [Pg.404]

Langmuir-Blodgett films were prepared by spreading a 2 x 1(T4 M solution of the enantiomerically pure helicenebisquinone in chloroform onto a water surface. After evaporation of the solvent, the monolayer was compressed to a surface pressure of 20 mN/m. After stabilization for 30 min, the monolayers were transferred by the horizontal dipping method onto glass substrates, treated with octadecyltrichlorosilane to make them hydrophobic. [Pg.559]

RET in two dimensions has been studied in monolayers, Langmuir-Blodgett films and phospholipid bilayers of vesides. In particular, RET provides a very useful tool for the investigation of biological membranes, as exemplified in Box 9.2. [Pg.261]

An inhomogeneous system of interest is one in which a monolayer or less of a material segregates to the surface of a particle. The fluorescent molecule dil(5) (Figure 8.14) is an example of a material which is expected to be surface active on polar liquids because of its hydrophilic head group and hydrophobic side chains. In fact, dil(5) has been used to prepare Langmuir-Blodgett films on water(21) and would be expected to be surface active on glycerol. [Pg.362]

A benzo[18]crown-6 adduct (72) of Cgg (not shown) has been synthesized by the addition of the corresponding o-quinodimethane 71 in toluene [58]. The solubility of 72 in pro tic solvents such as MeOH strongly increases after the complexation of ions, as shown by extraction experiments. The combination of the crown ether and the fullerene moiety in 72 provides a highly amphiphilic character. This behavior allowed the preparation of Langmuir-Blodgett films of monolayers on mica of 72 and its complex. [Pg.111]
