Labeling by deuterium or carbon-13 always leads to unequivocal signal identification of specific carbon atoms [600, 602, 640], After the administration of [5,6-14C-13C2]nicotinic acid to Nicotiana tabacum and N. glauca labeled anabasine anatabine, nicotine and nomicotine could be isolated. The elucidation of the biosynthetic pathway for the production of various metabolites has been extensively examined through the use of techniques that use isotopic labeling (stable isotopes and radioactive isotopes). Initially, radiolabeled precursors were introduced into plants and the resultant radioactive compounds were chemically degraded to identify the positions of the label. As the development of analytical instrumentation advanced, the isotopically labeled natural products were analyzed by mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy instead of chemical degradation. [Pg.2]

Application of NMR spectroscopy to heterocyclic chemistry has developed very rapidly during the past 15 years, and the technique is now used almost as routinely as H NMR spectroscopy. The benefits of the DSHEA to the manufacturers of natural products is obvious. They can claim a variety of health benefits for their products in very general terms that may sound to consumers like health claims but usually are not. When the ingredient labels of many advertised natural products are examined, they are often found to include a number of synthetic chemicals. The words natural or organic should not be interpreted as meaning good or better, and the presence of synthetic chemicals does not mean bad. There is no difference in chemicals derived from natural sources or produced synthetically. A chemical is the same chemical whether it comes from a natural or synthetic source.
