Impalas (Aepyceros melampus) found dead in Kruger National Park, South Africa, had elevated concentrations of copper in livers (maximum 444 mg/kg FW) and kidneys (maximum 141 mg/kg FW) authors assert that copper poisoning is the most likely cause of death (Gummow et al. 1991), but this needs verification. Copper concentrations in bones, kidneys, and livers of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) near a copper smelter and from distant sites are about the same. However, deer near the smelter have significantly elevated concentrations of cadmium in kidneys and livers, lead in bone, and zinc in kidneys (Storm et al. 1994). [Pg.170]

Zhou Leocadiah (University of Fort Hare, South Afiica) emphasised the need for a coordinated approach to managing animals, water and tourism in complex biodiverse ecosystems, with an example from the Kruger National Park. The involvement of many stakeholders may be essential for conservation to be successfiil. The operation of the A.P. Aspects of all these various topics were discussed at the fifth international Indaba workshop of the International Union of Crystallography at Berg-en-Dal, Kruger National Park, South Africa, 20-25 August 2006. In most instances the analysis terminated before a fundamental interpretation of the results, because there is no fundamental theory of chemistry. As all chemical interactions are mediated by electrons it is clear that such a theory must be quantum-mechanical. The only alternative is a phenomenological simulation of chemical processes with empirical classical models. There is no middle ground. [Pg.523]

C. Adult males, i, in response to other males Bulls rarely exhibit flehmen to non-musth male urine (Rasmussen et al., 1984)(Figure 5). Bulls exhibit flehmen frequently in response to their own urine during musth and to the musth urine of other bulls. From October 1983 to April 1985 36 flehmens to male musth urine were recorded. Male temporal gland secretions (musth) also elicited flehmen responses (Rasmussen et al., 1984). On two occasions during field observations of several African bulls in Kruger National Park, South Africa, a bull was observed to touch the penile area... [Pg.632]
