The three major types of TPEs are block copolymers such as SEES (styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block copolymer) (Kraton by Kraton Polymer), polyether— polyester (Hytrel by DuPont), rubber/plasticblends (900 series Sumitomo Chemical), and dynamically vulcanized rubber/plastic alloys (Innoprene by Kumho Polychem, Santo prene by Exxon-Mobil, Sarlink by DSM, Unipene byTeknor Apex). Figure 3.28 shows the cost versus general performance comparison for different TPEs [31]. [Pg.152]

Styrenic block copolymer (SBC) thermoplastic elastomers are produced by Shell Chemical (Kraton ), Firestone Synthetic Rubber and Latex, Division of Bridgestone/Firestone (Stereon t), Dexco Polymers (Vector ), EniChem Elastomers (Europrene ), and other companies. SBC properties and processes are described for these four producers TPEs. [Pg.192]

Styrene block copolymers are the most widely used TPEs. Styrenic TPEs are usually styrene butadiene styrene (SBS), styrene ethylene butadiene styrene (SEES), and styrene isoprene styrene (SIS). Styrenic TPEs usually have about 30 0 percent bound styrene. Principal styrenic TPE markets are molded shoe soles and other footwear, extruded film/sheet and wire/cable covering, and pressure-sensitive and hot-melt adhesives. They are also popular as grips for bike handles, kitchen utensils, clear medical products, and personal care products. The structural elucidation of multiphase polymers is a continuing problem as, at times, the few commonly used staining reagents are not satisfactory. Osmium tetroxide has the widest range of applicability, but there are polymers that cannot be differentiated by this stain. Mercuric trifluoroacetate has been described for the staining of several polymers [154] polystyrene, poly(2,6-dimethyl-l,4-phenylene oxide) and saturated styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymers (Kraton G, trademark. Shell Oil Company). [Pg.107]

The development of the styrenic block copolymers has created special challenges for resin manufacturers. These block copolymers are of two basic types. The first are the triblock copolymers, consisting of an elastomeric midblock and thermoplastic polystyrene end-blocks. These can be either the linear triblock copolymers, such as the Kraton polymers from Shell Chemical Company or the Europrene polymers from Enichem, or radial block copolymers, initially produced by Phillips Petroleum and now available from Petrofine SA under the tradename Finaprene. The linear triblock copolymers are the most widely used in the adhesive industry. [Pg.568]

Sulfonated Styrenic Block Copolymers Two kinds of styrene-based membranes were introduced by Dais Analytic Corporation (see Fig. 29.10). The first was fabricated from a commercially available styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene triblock polymer (Kraton) by postsulfonation of the styrenic units (Ehrenberg et al., 1995). Later, a new Dais Analytic membrane was developed based on an ethylene-styrene pseudorandom interpolymer from Dow Chemical Corporation (Serpico et al., 2002). Using a... [Pg.772]
