Poisonings associated with eating seafood significantly impact public health worldwide. For example during 1971 to 1990, seafood was the most important vehicle in food poisoning outbreaks in Korea (32%) and Japan (22%) and was responsible for 43% and 62%, respectively, of outbreak-related fatalities (Chan, 1995 Lee, 1996). [Pg.173]

The dust from mollusk shells can also provoke occupational allergies. Inhalation of mollusk shell dust in a nacre button factory was associated with h)q)ersensitivity pneumonitis (Orriols et ah, 1990, 1997). A similar case was identified in Korea (Kim et ah, 1982). Several Japanese investigators have described occupational asthma occurring among workers who culture oysters (Nakashima, 1969 Wada et ah, 1967). Exposure to dust from mofher-of-pearl in a souvenir maker (Tas, 1972) and fo cuttlefish bones in a jewelry polisher (Beltrami et ah, 1989) was linked to occupational asthma. [Pg.159]

Ginkgo. The leaves and seeds of this plant, native to China, Japan, and Korea, are used to improve age-related loss of memory, including the dementia associated with Alzheimer s disease, and to relieve ringing of the ears and a type of pain and weakness in the limbs called intermittent claudication. More than 40 studies involving more than 1,000 patients show that ginkgo has a modest effect on dementia and intermittent claudication, but does not seem to help with memory loss or ringing of the ears. [Pg.229]

Furthermore, urbanization means a significant increase in the surfaces without vegetation such as asphalt and building cover. Surface conditions could substantially influence the residence time and fate of POPs in a system. Agricultural activities, of which the dominant activity is rice cultivation, occur primarily in the western and southern areas of the South Korean peninsula. Thus, the water quality of the inland rivers is associated with OCP use history and agricultural products contamination in South Korea. [Pg.45]
