In a 2001 study entitled Epidemiologic Trends in Drug Abuse conducted by the Community Epidemiology Work Group (CEWG), a branch of NID A, the number of men who abused heroin strongly outweighed the number of female users. 

According to Pulse Check Trends in Drug Abuse, GHB users and sellers tend to be middle-class white males between the ages of 18 and 30. GHB is typically packaged in plastic bottles (generally water or sports drink bottles) and distributed by the capful for 5 to 20 per dose. Other popular packaging includes eyedropper bottles, glass vials, and mouthwash bottles.

It became clear at that meeting that trends in drug abuse are largely influenced by the availability of the illegal compounds. For us analysts, it may be more interesting to know whether they also depend upon the effectiveness of our analytical control and whether the development of GC-MS has had a practical impact. In order to answer these questions, I am going to give some examples taken from our own work in Zurich.
