Implementation tools differ in the facilities they offer. A major selection criterion is the knowledge representation possibilities the tools offer. Another important issue is the access to external programs. This is an important aspect for chemical knowledge bases since many chemical problems involve a large computational aspect that is best solved by an external, algorithmic program. 

If possible, the best procedure for selecting a tool is to implement a smaller test knowledge base similar to the final knowledge base in a few different tools. This test knowledge base should be small enough to be implemented quickly in different tools. On the other hand, it must be specific enough to highlight the differences between the tools. 

Taken together, all of these points suggest that it might be possible to prepare a toolkit consisting of the essential components of an ES, apart from the knowledge base, and then fill it with application-specific data. This is such a useful way to work that in all expert systems there is a clean separation between the information that the ES manipulates and the tools that are required to perform that manipulation. This division between the part of an ES that changes between applications and that which is constant has led to the development of the expert system shell. 

A very useful tool is the Emrys Knowledge Database, representing a collection of detailed protocols for reactions performed with Biotage (Personal Chemistry) instmments. To date, this web-based tool contains around 4000 entries. 

Expert systems have been investigated for 20 years. The implementation of expert systems is now being undertaken on a widespread basis, due to the availability of hardware and software tools which alleviate the "knowledge-engineer bottleneck", allowing cost effective implementation. In a similar way, real-time applications of expert systems require tools to allow straightforward implementation. We have presented a software/hardware structure which supports knowledge-base capture and real-time inference for process applications.
